Northbrook Middle School students and teachers visited campus!
On Monday, October 3, HACER hosted 180 Northbrook Middle School students. We showed them around our beautiful campus and then held an information session, with the focus of encouraging the importance of continuing education. We led a tour entirely in Spanish for the ESL students who just recently came to the U.S., their favorite spots on campus were the Frog Wall and the Whispering Wall. We also had a student panel, where the students got the opportunity to ask questions about the college experience. The students were excited to learn more about college and some were surprised to hear we could live on campus! Overall, the students enjoyed it and the teachers were grateful. Shoutout to our members and SHPE’s members that helped out with the event!
YES Prep Gulfton Visit

We are hosting a group YES Prep Gulfton 7th graders on Rice campus.
We’ll be giving them basic information about what it’s like to be in college, what it takes to a good student, etc.
If you are interesting in helping out, being a panelist, or leading a small group of students on a short tour, sign up below!

Project Pumpkin
Hello everyone! I hope you had a fantastic mid-term recess. Here is the signup for the Project Pumpkin festival!
Project Pumpkin is a carnival put on by Rice clubs and associations to give at-risk kids a safe trick-or-treating experience on Rice campus. HACER is hosting a trick-or-treating booth and relay races.
It is taking place next Saturday, October 26 from 1:15 – 3:45 in the Central Quad. Even if you only have half an hour free, be sure to come on by the booth! There is more detailed information on the form~!
One Goal
OneGoal is a college persistence organization, and our program is currently in 7 schools in HISD. We have over 150 students who are currently in the program. They are all juniors in high school and most of them will be attending our conference next Saturday October 26th at Rice; they will be in the RMC, Grand Hall.
These students all come from low-income backgrounds and many of them are attending high need high schools. Our teachers (program directors) work with these students to make college a reality, and our one goal for our students is college graduation.
Because the vast majority of our students are Black or Hispanic/Latino, I think it will be very powerful for them to hear from successful college students like you and others in HACER, and there are a couple ways you can participate:
1. Conference Introduction: (about 10:15-10:20am) 1 or 2 of you can speak to the whole group for a few minutes
2. Join us for lunch in the Grand Hall (12:00-12:45) and mingle informally with our students–tell them a bit about your journey, give them advice, answer questions they have about the process of getting into college and college life.
Hispanic Youth Heritage Awards
The Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards are awards given to underprivileged Hispanic high school seniors. There are different companies, ExxonMobil, Target, Southwest, etc., that sponsor the awards and will also be there. The attire is business professional and there will be dinner served. Come to represent the Hispanic Organizations around campus and recruit Hispanics from this event! Talk to high school seniors, network with cool companies.
This event will be Monday, October 28th in the RMC Grand Hall, tentatively from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
Dia de los Muertos Festival

MECA proudly presents Dia De Los Muertos: Honoring our Past, Celebrating Our Future. Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Latin American holiday that honors and celebrates the lives of family and friends who have gone before us. MECA’s event features Dia de los Muertos celebrations from throughout Latin America, with an altar exhibit competition, foods from the Americas, vendors selling authentic Latin American Dia de los Muertos arts and crafts, and a Calavera Fashion Show. This festival is truly a community cultural event celebrating our ancestors and Latin American traditions. BSA has invited HACER to be part of their volunteering event at the Houston Food Bank. It’s on November 23 and will leave at 7:30 AM and be back by 12:30 PM. They need at least 15 volunteers.

This Saturday is my favorite event of the year – the Houston Hispanic Forum! (Yay!)
(Almost) Every university, college and high school student and parent on this side of San Antonio will flock to George R Brown Convention Center this Saturday in search of valuable information about higher education.
HACER is partnering up with SHPE to run both a booth for general Rice information and a panel room regarding college application processes and STEM, and we need a few volunteers to help out!
This is a great opportunity, especially if you are interested in running for Community Service Coordinator and want to know what it’s like!
VISION 2014
Hey HACER! It’s that time of year again where prospective students start wandering around campus. MIC (Minority Interest Committee) will be hosting VISION (250+ prospies) Sunday, February 16 to Tuesday, February 18
and we need hosts! Most prospies will arrive Sunday afternoon and depart Tuesday by noon. You must live on-campus to host but anyone can volunteer to help us out by meeting prospies at the airport, in the Sallyport (no worries you don’t walk out of it), or facilitating events in Monday night.
