Volunteer for New Student Reception!   
When: Saturday, August 17, 2019 from 11 am – 4 pm
Where: Herring Hall
The Hispanic New Student Reception is coming up and we really need volunteers so if you’re going to be in Houston on Saturday, August 17th and have any free time between 11 am-4 pm please please please reach out to Laura at lv14@rice.edu with your availability so she can add you to the list of volunteers! If you want to volunteer but have advisor training, just shoot your coord a message and they may say you can come for part of it 🙂
Summer Requests for Ritmo! 2019
This is a reminder to look at Bryan’s email and see how you can get involved in Ritmo! We need choreographers, cultural pieces, and feedback on how to improve Ritmo, which you can submit “here”.
Tutor with Upward Bound!
The Upward Bound Math & Science program is looking for tutors! The details about the postion are attached below.
Community Event: East Aldine Flooding Futures
When: Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 10 am – 2 pm
Where: MacArthur High School
This will be a half-day panel event which will feature: East Aldine community leaders, flood survivors, Rice professors, and experts on climate change, flood resilience, and urban development. They will be addressing climate justice and social equity in a predominately Latinx community that has faced a disproportionate amount of severe flooding events. A shuttle bus will be provided from Rice to MacArthur as well as lunch. Please RSVP on the Facebook event page “here“!

Houston Youth Voters Conference
When: Friday, September 20, 2019
Where: Univeristy of Houston – Downtown
This year, University of Houston-Downtown will be hosting the University of Houston, Texas Southern University, and Rice University to discuss the importance of youth voting and how we can become advocates!
This year, they are focusing on local elections. Why? Because we’ve got mayoral and city council elections coming up, along with a ton of other elected positions that impact our daily lives as Houstonians! RSVP required to attend so RSVP “here“!
 
HACU 33rd Annual Conference

If you didn’t know already, Rice is a HACU (Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities) member institution. HACU’s Annual Conference provides a unique forum for the sharing of information and ideas for the best and most promising practices in the education of Hispanics. Stargazing with Houston Astronomical Society
When: Saturday, August 10, 2019 at 8 pm
Where: Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney Houston, Texas 77010
            (26 minute metro ride or 13 minute car ride)
Join the Houston Astronomical Society (H.A.S.) for a star party in the heart of Space City. Volunteers from H.A.S. will be on hand to show off the moon, other planets in our solar system, and various deep-sky objects through a number of telescopes, and to answer questions you may have about space and astronomy.
Nigerian Cultural Parade & Festival
When: Saturday, September 28, 2019 starting at 9 am – 4 pm
Where: ROOT MEMORIAL SQUARE PARK 1400 CLAY ST. HOUSTON, TX 77002
            (21 minute metro ride or 12 minute car ride)
The 3rd Edition of the Nigeria Cultural Parade & Festival will create awareness in a multi-ethnic environment in the most flamboyant way possible! Dance, music, and of course, Nigerian cuisine provided by Wazobia African Market. Free entry.
